Description:
What is a Gastropub?
A new type of eating place
bridging the gap between booze joints and upscale restaurants.
These cuisine-conscious taverns started to appear about
15 years ago in England. Gastropubs have become the
London equivalent of the French brasserie, with good
food that’s also a good value.
Chef
Owner Ben Berryhill attributes his appreciation for impeccably
fresh ingredients to childhood summers spent on a farm
in East Texas. Kitchen jobs in Texas, Hawaii and Colorado
followed, prior to his enrolling at the Culinary Institute
of America in Hyde Park, NY. In 1994, Ben married Marianna
Michaels, who was at that time Café Annie's wine
buyer and general manager. When Berryhill was appointed
executive chef in 1999, together they made Café
Annie one of the world's top restaurants, earning many
distinguished local and national awards, including being
named one of America's Top Tables by Gourmet. Berryhill
co-hosted a local weekly cooking show along with the restaurant's
owner, Robert Del Grande.
In
May 2005 Chef Berryhill opened The Red Drum Gastropub
in Mount Pleasant South Carolina. The cuisine-conscious
tavern features handmade upscale Southwestern fare in
a beautiful white table cloth setting along with an extensive
wine beer and cocktail list. Most recently, The Red Drum
Gastropub was hailed as the best new restaurant by the
Charleston Post & Courier.
Ben and his wife are now
happily settled in South Carolina, where they have not
only their new restaurant, but also a new beautiful baby
boy, Raymond. <more>
